Current and future families of TeWinkle Middle School were invited to Future Trojan Night on March 7. The school gymnasium was packed with approximately 300 attendees there to learn about all the school has to offer to seventh- and eighth-grade students.

After introducing the staff, Principal Dr. Ixchel Sanchez focused on TeWinkle’s expanded roster of electives. Teachers and students spoke about the Associated Student Body (ASB) experience, the Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program, green architecture, journalism, Medical Detectives, music, robotics, Spanish, visual and performing arts, and more.

Families were reminded how much TeWinkle cares with an entertaining performance featuring the administration and counseling staff dressed as Care Bears. Attendees were then invited to the carnival-style open house with interactive tables hosted by every department.

Costumed in medieval clothing, the history department offered a photo booth, while English teachers dressed as “greasers” and “soc-es” from the book “The Outsiders.” Visitors to the science department were offered stress balls, and Spanish Teacher Dilsa Urriola Delgado handed out Mexican candy. The math department hosted an estimation station. Current and future students were invited to decorate flowers and share their best coping skills for a “TeWinkle Blooms” display. Music Teacher Christopher Colocho welcomed attendees to get a feel for the instruments the band and orchestra use. Art Teacher Ryan Longacre greeted attendees with displays of his students’ artwork and offered on-the-spot drawings.

“It was an incredible evening! Our students and teachers were buzzing with excitement as they shared their TeWinkle experiences. It was a great display of all the phenomenal programs TeWinkle has to offer, and it showcased the warmth and inclusivity that illustrates TeWinkle is a place where everyone truly belongs,” Sanchez said.

In addition to feeding their minds, families were able to purchase food to fill their bellies, including tacos, burgers, and shaved ice.
